Executive Director's Message

Hilda V. Maldonado

It is always a great pleasure to address friends, colleagues, and sponsors, but there is a more profound meaning in addressing you from partnership committed to disadvantaged citizens. That parnership includes youth, children, families, and several adults who have interwined their lives with Aspira of Puerto Rico. Together, we have grown, achieved goals, and contributed to the social and economic well-being of our island.

Aspira has, without govermental incentives, created hundreds of jobs. Currently, we are 525 employees who contribute to the public treasury and live honorable lives filled with the satisfaction that comes from the sacred duty of serving one's neighbor. At the end of every project, we celebrate its certainties, and we acknowledge its weaknesses to avoid future mistakes. And with every new project, we renew our dreams and rejuvenate our hopes.

Throughout its existence, our organization has dramatically demostrated its ability to adjust to diverse social and economic contexts. This intelligent flexibility was recently created by market globalization and the spreading of high technology. With extraordinary courage, we gave ourselves to the task of putting the knowledge and tools for digital inclusion within the reach of disadvantaged individuals.

Financially supported by the U.S. Department of Education, and the Verizon Foundation, we set up technology centers in varios communities on the island, and technology and literacy laboratories in thirteen public schools. A new grant from the U.S. Department of Education will allow us to open technology centers in varios regions, so that middle schools may become skiled in technology.

Together with the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, and the Puerto Rico Department of Education, Aspira is also involved in a project to create technology centers in 45 public schools on the island. In Addition, with the sponsorship of Cisco Systems, we offer a training program on computer networks, network security, and wireless technology.

One significant initiative in which Aspira collaborates is the San Juan Metro Alliace for Education. The goal of this alliance, composed of the University of the Sacred Heart, the College Board, the Fundación Comunitaria de Puerto Rico, and the Deparment of Education, is to develop a model of systematic change for public schools.
